The city of London is known for many reasons, not all of them positive. Historically, during the years of the Industrial Revolution, London was once the most polluted city in the world. Factories involved in the production of clothing, metallurgy and even mining were clustered together. Quantities of soot and other harmful substances were released into the air without restriction, making the sky darker and it was dangerous to breathe.
London has changed significantly since its dark days during the Industrial Revolution. Although it is still one of the most polluted cities in Europe, the city is making progress towards making it more environmentally friendly. One such approach is the recent acquisition of greener taxis.
London taxis have a reputation of their own. They are seen as the most expensive taxis in the world. In return for their high rates, London taxis provide some of the best services and have the friendliest drivers. Consequently, although the high rates of London taxis are seen as the best in the world. Providing greener taxis makes them more attractive to consumers.
Mercedes Electric eVito Taxi, commonly known as eVito, was built to be safe for both passengers and the environment. Installed with a 94 hp engine that draws its power from a lithium-ion battery, it drives just like traditional Mercedes taxis.
The news of these newer models could not have been released in a better time. The mayor of London approved stricter road emissions standards, just in time for the 2012 Olympics. Currently, the eVito is undergoing controlled clinical trials to evaluate its functionality before being used on the streets of London.
