Types of reusable bags based on the materials used

Basically, there are 3 main types of reusable bags – fabric, paper and plastic.

Reusable fabric bags

There are many reusable textile bags on the market today. Each bag has its pros and cons.

Cotton and linen – These are the most common types. They are made of natural fibers. They can be made of traditional cotton, organic cotton or recycled cotton. Each cotton bag needs to be reused 131 times to match the performance of a plastic shopping bag only once. This is necessary to compensate for the huge carbon footprint or global warming potential.

Calico – It is a cotton fiber that is not fully processed. Since it is a bit like a cotton bag, it is very resource intensive. It needs to be used hundreds of times to match the environmental performance of its alternatives.

Hemp – It’s a natural fiber that is stronger than cotton. It is used for industrial or textile applications. The plant can be grown in poor soil. It is also drought tolerant and grows very well even without the use of fertilizers or pesticides. This material is among the best options, as it is very durable and resistant to rot. It is often combined with cotton.

Jute – It is also a natural plant fiber that can be wound in strong threads. It grows in areas with heavy rainfall and, like hemp, it can grow beautifully without pesticides. It can also be mixed with other fabrics.

Reusable paper bags

Paper bags are now used in stores around the world. It is biodegradable and made from a renewable source. The main problem with its use is that it tears and loses strength when exposed to moisture. In addition, they are 6-10 times heavier compared to lightweight plastic bags.

Reusable plastic bags

PET – Looks and feels like a bag made of fabric, but made of plastic. This material is very durable and ecological. It is made of post-consumer recycled plastic containers and bottles. It will also require 2/3 less energy to produce products made of PET. Most importantly, it can be combined with other fabrics for a better look.

Polypropylene – Made of bonded, spun and non-woven polypropylene. It is popular due to its strength and slightly stiff profile. For stability, a semi-rigid insert has been placed at the bottom of the bag.

Nylon – It is a type of synthetic polymer originally used to replace silk. The material can fit in a small bag for easy use and storage.
