Remember when the only person using a hand mower was either your grandpa or that little kid who mowed your yard for a few bucks. Times are different now, and the trend towards a greener lifestyle has brought the push or “drum” handheld mower back into fashion.
It’s a simple rule that cuts the grass, the spiral tube or spool of blades spins in the holder depending on how fast or slow you push the mower. Newer designs of push mowers significantly exceed the cutting power of mowers from several decades ago. Newer metal composites allow sharper blades that stay sharp longer.
The new push mowers are also quieter than your grandparents but still require some effort to get results. While mowing your yard with a robotic lawnmower can take 45 minutes, it will probably take around 60 minutes with a walk behind mower. Work is the equivalent of light aerobic training with the added benefit of wellness.
Drum mowers don’t cut tall grass such as swamp grass very well, and they don’t handle sticks or stones very well, but what does the mower do then? But as long as you regularly trim your lawn, meaning the grass is never too long, the procedure will be relatively easy for lawns up to 4-5,000 square feet and up to around 7,000 if you have a helper.
No grass catcher is needed for regularly mowed lawns. One of the benefits of a hand lawn mower is that it contributes to the health of the lawn by recycling the grass. Grass clippings left on the lawn add nitrogen to the lawn, which acts as a natural fertilizer.
Your alternatives are gas-powered mowers, which are not an alternative due to the pollution they emit. The average gas powered lawn mower throws out about 10 times more hydrocarbons than the average car. This is not a very environmentally friendly way of mowing your lawn.
There are also electric mowers, and aside from their use of electricity, they can be quite earth-friendly. They do suffer from cable length issues, of course, but for a little more money you can buy one of the new cordless electricians. The electrics really make a difference when your lawn grows more than 6,000 or 7,000 square feet.
All in all, if you mow your yard regularly, enjoy a bit of gentle exercise, and want to give something to the planet, then a walk-behind lawn mower is the best option for mowing grass easily and healthy.
